The study of intrapopulation variability in wing pattern and morphometric parameters in several populations of Hyponephele maureri (Staudinger, 1886) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) revealed that the patterns of significant differences in wing shape and coloration among individuals are similar for all studied populations. The observed uniformity in variations indicates the absence of differences necessary for distinguishing subspecies. Therefore, based on the established intrapopulation variability and the absence of diagnostic differences, the previously described subspecies H. maureri subnephele (Stshetkin, 1963) should be considered a junior subjective synonym of the species in question, i.e., H. maureri = H. maureri subnephele. This taxonomic revision emphasizes the importance of considering intrapopulation phenotypic variability when distinguishing subspecific taxa in Lepidoptera.
